Alexandra "Spicey" Landé

Montreal choreographer and major figure in hip-hop dance in Quebec, it was in 2005 that 'Spicey' began his career as a choreographer. The symbiotic relationship she maintains with dance and Hip-Hop culture in her choreographic work constitutes the essence of her artistic signature. As an independent choreographer, 'Spicey' presented three works in Quebec between 2008 and 2015, including Retrospek, awarded the RIDEAU - Entrances Loto Quebec scholarship in 2009, which influenced a generation of Montreal street dancers. At the same time, the Bust A Move Festival which she founded in 2005 (until 2015) has established itself as the biggest street dance competition in Canada; TOHU becomes the co-presenter. Wishing to push his artistic aspirations further, and to promote street dance creation on contemporary dance scenes, 'Spicey' founded the Ebnflōh company in 2015. She approaches the language of hip-hop from a new choreographic angle, both exploratory, original and authentic, surrounded by accomplices and peers who fuel the creative process. The company imagines new ways to create, and to share its reflections on social, political and artistic issues. Spicey created Complexe R at MAI in 2015, a work inspired by our human obsessions. The show travels to New York and Amsterdam. In 2019, she presented In-Ward with 6 performers, a show featuring a group of isolated individuals, co-produced by the CCOV. The show sold out 9 times in Montreal. 'Spicey' won the Prix de la Danse de Montréal in the Discovery category in 2019, and In-Ward was a finalist for the Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal in 2020. La Probabilité du Néant, the sixth work of 'Spicey' and fourth for his Ebnflōh company, takes a lucid look at our perception, our judgment and the consequences of our choices and recalls our formidable capacity for resistance and resilience. This was presented at the Théâtre Maisonneuve by Danse Danse in the fall of 2021 to a sold-out crowd. Alexandra 'Spicey' Landé has also been a performer and hip-hop dance teacher for over two decades. She is regularly invited to offer master classes and act as a judge on street dance competitions here and internationally.

 
Ebnflōh

Ebnflōh (pronounced Ebenflo) comes from the English term "ebb and flow" which marks action and reaction, ebb and flow, constant movement and change. Like the perpetual rippling of water, the company's choreographic language is anchored in the fluidity of movement. With a meticulous precision that allows the exposure of multiple details and nuances, the choreographer has been offering, since 2008, intense works where several layers of reading are superimposed. She takes a singular and deeply relational look at what we are used to seeing on the surface. Influenced by theater and film, her work also builds bridges with other disciplines, notably music. Ebnflōh aims to promote contemporary creation and street dance artists on stages in Quebec, Canada and internationally. In particular, the company highlights the point of view and practices of emerging and culturally diverse artists. It wants to attract the interest of a large number of spectators and make street dance accessible to a diversity of audiences. Finally, in the context where street dance is not taught by the academic community, the transmission of the hip-hop language to future generations is a central point of its commitment. Ebnflōh was born from the desire to explore and develop an original, authentic and innovative Hip Hop aesthetic and choreographic language.
