Workshop - MAYDAY

Mélanie Demers/MAYDAY’s workshops explore the role of dance and art in society and are designed to provide a territory where real encounters are possible in a safe and experimental environment. The workshops invite all participants, regardless of their origin or background, to explore the “inner mythology”.

Each session begins with a discussion and then continues with a physical application of the concerns raised by the discussion. Soon, guided improvisations take over and the process begins. The sessions are conducted in a spirit of sharing experiences. A particular emphasis is placed on intimacy and extimacy, on vertical and horizontal awareness and the connection to the creative potential of movements and speech.

Mélanie Demers

Since its founding in 2007, MAYDAY has been a platform for exchange and reflection for the artists who surround Mélanie Demers. Here, the maturation of the work is the result of a collective act. We find a “physicality,” a rhythm and an accumulation of images specific to MAYDAY that find resolution in the encounter with the public. Inspired by the winds of creativity that blow in various parts of the planet, MAYDAY produces unique works that demonstrate great freedom of spirit and very contemporary concerns. Mélanie Demers’ fascination with the cohabitation of word and gesture crystallized with WOULD, a work that won the CALQ Prize for best choreographic work at the Prix de la danse de Montréal in 2015. WOULD will be followed by the choreographic relay Danse Mutante in 2019; by La Goddam Voie Lactée, MAMA and Confession Publique in 2021, the year she received the GRAND PRIX de la danse de Montréal. This highlights the unique mark she leaves on her time. In 2022, it is the turn of the work Cabaret Noir to take the spotlight. A highly nomadic structure, MAYDAY multiplies international collaborations and can boast, despite its young age, of being one of the rare Canadian companies to have already performed in America, Europe, Asia and Africa.
