Creation Laboratory

SUMMER. CAMP.

As in sunny sweaty kinship.

As in kitschy flamboyant irreverence.

Tapping into the spirit of a summer camp, this creation lab proposes an ephemeral and festive space for a group of artists to meet and make together. We wish to build off the group in the room, all while sharing creative tools we’ve been developing over the years. We aim to create high energy choreographic sequences that tackle specific performative states, evolving spatial geometries, and playful physicalities supported by electropop beats. How to create a contagious, deliberate, structured proposition in a condensed time frame? We don’t know (but we kind of do), and we want to figure it out with you.

Let’s be Cool For The Summer, together.

Alexandre Morin

Alexandre Morin is a choreographer, performer, and professor at École de danse contemporaine de Montréal. A graduate of EDCM in 2013, he received the Hnatyshyn Foundation Award recognizing a promising young artist in contemporary dance in Canada. As a performer, he has danced for, among others, Marie Chouinard, Sylvain Émard, and Dominique Porte. In 2022, he was selected for a choreographic exchange between Italy and Quebec offered by the CALQ, Circuit-Est, and CSC Centro per la Scena Contemporanea in Bassano del Grappa. The 2023–2024 season marked a pivotal year for Morin, as he presented three works in rapid succession: Anatomie d’un moteur (Agora de la danse), Plasticity/Desires (co-presented by MAI and La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines), and Cutting Through the Noise (Agora de la danse).

Mathieu Leroux

Mathieu Leroux is a writer, performer, director, and dance dramaturg. A graduate of the Université du Québec à Montréal (theatre: acting and directing) and the Université de Montréal (French literature), he received the Geneviève-De-La-Tour-Fondue Award for excellence for his master’s thesis. His novel Dans la cage (Héliotrope) was shortlisted for the Prix du Premier Roman de Chambéry (France). In 2013–14, he was writer-in-residence at the Goethe-Institut in Montreal and Berlin. Leroux has created a solo performance (La naissance de Superman, TSF), a group piece (Scrap, Espace Libre), and a choreographic duo with Sébastien Provencher (Bones & Wires, Tangente). He has authored numerous publications (novels, essays, and narrative works). As a performer, he has danced and acted in works by Helen Simard, Louis-Karl Tremblay, Morena Prats, and Alexandre Morin. As a dramaturg, he has collaborated for several years with, among others, Victor Quijada, Dorotea Saykaly, and Catherine Gaudet; he has also been part of the creative teams for productions by tanzmainz (Mainz, Germany) and Ballet BC (Vancouver, Canada).
